Bride of the Living Dummy by Katie C., Staff Writer
The author of this book is R.L Stine. It was released in 1998. He created Slappy, who is a dummy (which is like a puppet), because he liked the idea of The Adventures of Pinocchio. This dummy is not such a dummy.
A girl named Jillian has to take her six year old sisters, Katie and Amanda, to a ventriloquist show. Jillian brings her friend, Harrison. Katie and Amanda, who are twins, bring a big doll named Maryellen. Jillian hates the doll because it’s creepy and ugly. The twins take the doll everywhere; you’ll have to read the book to find out why.
The ventriloquist has a dummy named Slappy. The ventriloquist’s name is Jimmy O’James. He asks for two assistants and he picks Katie and Amanda. Slappy says mean things about the twins. Jimmy O’James tells Slappy to stop but he will not. The girls run back to their seats. At the end of the show, Katie and Amanda go to talk to the ventriloquist. Jillian follows them, but cannot find them. Harrison helps look too. Jillian hears talking in a room. She opens the door and Jimmy O’James in the room arguing with Slappy! How is it possible that Jimmy was arguing with a dummy? To find out, you should read this great mystery chapter book.
I give this book 4.5 stars out of 5 because I really liked how brave the characters were, especially Jillian. Also, after reading the book, I felt that I wanted to read more. Luckily, there’s other books in the “Slappy” series--Night of the Living Dummy, Son of Slappy, and Revenge of the Living Dummy.

Chernobyl… Then and Now by Tyler Q., Staff Writer
Well it all starts about 30 years ago, April 26,1986. The mighty power plant Chernobyl is at its last day of powering part of the Ukraine, in the Soviet Union (now Russia). The workers of Chernobyl are on an early shift, doing a test that will soon go wrong. When the workers accidentally put the temperature too high… BOOOOOM goes Reactor 4! Nobody knew what happened to Reactor 4 in Pripyat, Ukraine. As far away as Switzerland was affected by the radiation.
The people of Pripyat did not know for 2 days what had happened at Chernobyl. The people of Pripyat were not warned because the Geiger counters said that the amount of radiation was 3.002 but it was really 15,000. There was something obviously wrong with the Geiger counters.
The chief engineer sent two men to go in and check out Reactor 4. When the two men saw Reactor 4, they burst into tears. Not because they were contaminated, but because they would have to leave their dream job at Chernobyl and go far away to live and work because there was too much radiation. Many people got sick and died from the radiation. Some survived, but they had a lot of health issues.
Now, in 2015, Chernobyl is still closed and will remain so. Scientists are sending in drones to research Reactor 4. Drones are like an electric plane and helicopter combined. The drones get information about Reactor 4. Knowing more will help the people understand Chernobyl and prevent this disaster from happening again.

Stand up to Bullying by Hailey S., Staff Writer
Right now 15 -20 percent of kids at schools are being bullied. Many kids have been bullied before. You may know someone who was called names and even physically hurt. If you have been bullied before, then you probably know what I mean.
A way to prevent bullying is to try and stay away from the person. Also, you can be the person who stands up to the bully. If you are afraid to stand up to them, get a friend for backup. They can make sure the bully doesn’t hurt you. I talked to Ms. Glass, my school’s guidance counselor, and I asked her for some advice. I asked her for a definition of bullying. She said there are two definitions. The legal one is where you cannot bully someone on their looks, or their gender, ability, and/or age; if you do so, you can be considered a bully by the Board of Education. This is a state law.
The psychological form of bullying is acts that happen over and over again from one person to another by repeated intimidation or intent. That is to overpower another person physically, mentally, or emotionally.
Please stop bullying and be an upstander. Don’t sit around and be a bystander. Help stop bullying and you can be a hero.
