Appleby School Demands Better Food!
by Jason S. with Dylan K. and Omar E. On October 24, 2013, The Sentinel did an article about our schools food. After we all read the article, The Buzz decided to do a survey of our own. Ms. Torchiano, our Editor-in-chief, sent out a survey asking teachers to poll their students about the new food service. When we got the results back, we noticed something odd. 106 students liked last year’s food versus 119 students that liked this year’s food. Based on the article in The Sentinel, we expected more students to like last year’s food. We also asked about certain foods. We asked about three of the student’s favorite foods—hot dogs, pizza and chicken nuggets. We found out that more students enjoyed last year’s hot dogs as compared to this year’s (114 vs. 55). As for the pizza, more students also enjoyed last year’s pizza versus this year (178 vs. 41). Lastly, we asked about chicken nuggets. The results were 141 preferred last year compared to the 68 that liked this year. Even though more people liked this year’s food as compared to last year’s food, when we asked about specific foods, more people liked last year’s. Perhaps if the new food service focused on improving just the pizza, hot dogs and chicken nuggets, there wouldn’t be so much controversy about school food. |
Appleby at Talent Time
by Emily C., Staff Writer Want to join chorus or band at Appleby? Here’s the perfect opportunity for you. Kids in 3rd grade to 5th grade are invited to join. All you need to do is get your parents to approve it and you can do it! Chorus doesn’t start until the spring for the 3rd grade, but you can do it all year long if you’re in 4th or 5th grade. You have to really want to take the time to do this though, as it’s a big commitment. You have to cooperate, not goof around, and you must go to rehearsals after school. Band is fun too! You have to be in 4th grade to participate though. While you’re waiting to join the 4th grade band, you could take lessons at a music store, and then you will be in good shape by 4th grade. In the 4th grade band, the instrument choices are: clarinet, flute, trombone, and trumpet. Additionally, there are percussion instruments available, but you have to try out for them. I spoke to Mr. Bartlett and Mrs. Shaughnessy to find out what they think about Band and Chorus at Appleby. Mr. Bartlett said during the concert he likes to see the smiles on everyone’s face when they are playing their instruments well. Mr. Bartlett said he became a music teacher because he came from a musical family. His mother and grandfather were both music teachers, so it just seemed natural for him. Also he had a wonderful middle school band teacher, Mr. Dooley. Mrs. Shaughnessy said she picks the songs by listening to a lot of music and try’s to figure out what matches her students’ personalities. Mrs. Shaughnessy likes to have the concerts so the kids can show off their talent. Our next band and chorus concert is on Thursday, December 5th at 7pm, so come on down and enjoy the fun and maybe see if you want to do it too! |
Soccer
by Gabe R., Staff Writer Soccer is fun and entertaining all around the world. There are a lot of interesting facts that many people do not know about. Did you know that soccer was invented in a prison in London? People that committed a crime would get their hands cut off, so they created a sport that only uses feet. Can you believe that? Another interesting fact about soccer is that Queen Elizabeth the Second played pick-up soccer matches near Buckingham Palace when she was a teenager. She was a natural athlete. Also, soccer balls are slightly oval shaped, but the pattern on the ball creates an illusion so it looks like a sphere. One more interesting fact about soccer is that Mexico is the only country that hosted the World Cup two times. Soccer is a fun sport that is loved by many people. You should give it a try.
