Appleby Idol
By: Sofia V. and Joey S., Staff Writers
Appleby Idol is scheduled for June 13th at 7:00 pm. We will also be doing a school performance after lunch! The opening song is Pompeii by Bastille. After Pompeii, the boys will sing a group song to Demons by Imagine Dragons. That will be followed by the girls singing Stronger by Kelly Clarkson. Then the soloists will perform. There are amazing singing voices at Appleby School. Our second grade winner is Ava T. and our third grade winner is Megan P. The fourth grade winner is Joseph S. and lastly the fifth grade winner is Alison C. This is really exciting because we have less than a month to practice and we have to learn to sing and dance at the same time! The show stopper finale is going to be amazing. We will sing Happy by Pharell Williams. It is going to be great show and it is open to all residence of Spotswood!

Field Day Fun… An Interview with Mr. Horvath
By Emily C., Emily C., and Sofia V.
Q: What made you have the idea of starting field day?
A: I realized that Appleby School had an abundance of fields so why not dedicate a day to the soft, verdant, push, and weedy turf.
Q: How do you pick which class wears which color?
A: I try to match the color to that classroom teacher’s hair. We used to have a lot of gray teams but not anymore. The staff has gotten much younger.
Q: How do you pick the activities for each grade level?
A: The activities are carefully selected. I write activities on index cards--one activity per card. There are many cards in all. Then I toss the cards in the air and play 52 pick-up.
Q: Why do you think field day is important to have at Appleby School?
A: It is important because it is the only day that I buy bagels for Appleby staff. I have to try to appease them by buying bagels because they would much rather be teaching math and spelling. Many of them can’t take the heat and they are never in their kitchen.
Q: Did you have field day as a kid?
A: I had a field, but not a field day. The field wasn’t much of a field. It was sandy and rocky. There wasn’t a blade of grass in sight. When the wind whipped up, dust storms blew sand in my eyes, nose, and my throat. My sneakers and socks were always dirty when I went home from the sand storms in the dustbowl. The fields outside the Appleby gym…now that’s a field!
Q: What color does each class have to wear?
A: Refer to answer #2
Q: What is your favorite activity?
A: Tug of War- what is it good for- absolutely nothing- say it again.
Q: What do the students need to do to be prepared for this day?
A: Marathons runners load carbohydrates the night prior to a race. I would recommend Wheaties loading the day of the event- after all it is “the breakfast of champions.’’
Q: Will there be a make-up day for field day, weather permitting?
A: No make-up for field day, just sun screen.
Q: How much water should each kid bring to stay hydrated during the day?
A: How much stock do their parents have in Poland Spring?
Thank you, Mr. Horvath! This is one of the most entertaining interviews we've done this year!

How to Play Softball
Alex D. and Jules K., Staff Writers
“CRACK” goes the bat as you hit the ball. We hear that sound at every practice and game. Softball has been a US sport since 1887. George Hancock, a reporter for the Chicago Board of Trade, invented softball.
Here are some basic rules:
1. You need to have at least nine players on your team.
2. The playing field is divided into the infield and outfield.
3. The lines between the bases are 60 degree apart. That forms a diamond and inside the base line is called the infield.
4. The outfield is outside the base line.
There are many different positions you can play in softball. There is the pitcher, catcher, right and left out fielders. There is also a shortstop, first, second and third basemen.
Playing softball is fun. We love it. We hope you will give it a try!

Animals, Animals, Animals!
Angelina M., Staff Writer
Oh my gosh! The Third Grade ESP class has blown me away. Their TV shows about endangered animals are educational and fun at the same time. They included four animals-- the red panda by Diya P. and Ariana C., the polar bear by Megan P. and Celine M., the sea otter by Joseph M. and Eric A., and finally, the Javan rhino by Aryan M. and Caden D. They have a phenomenal speaking talent. They speak with enthusiastic tones. When I watched their shows they were so good they sounded like they were professionals . I loved how they were so confident and proud of what they accomplished. I absolutely know they tried their best. I guarantee you will love them.

German Shepherds
by Ashley H. and Allison Z. - Staff Writers
German Shepherds are great pets they are very strong and brave. They are very energetic. They have good behavior and are easy to train. Some of them are Police Dogs! They never disobey their owners. They start as small puppies and grow into large dogs. They are highly active indoors and outdoors. They can be dangerous, but are also very sweet. German Shepherds are usually brown and black with pointy ears. They are cute and cuddly. German Shepherds make great pets!

Baseball is Number 1
by Dylan K., Staff Writer
I play baseball and think you should try it because it is fun and good exercise. First of all, you have to know how to play the game. There are nine players in baseball. I usually play pitcher, catcher or second base. To play catcher you need to have a chest and shin guards and a catcher’s helmet. To play pitcher you need a stance and a strong arm. To play second basemen you need to be good with your glove in order to catch the pop fly and ground balls. Outfielders get all the home runs if they are not too high. I hope you like baseball. I know I do.
